Our Mission

Fishing with America’s Finest is dedicated to providing veterans and their families with no-cost recreational therapy fishing trips.

About

Fishing With America’s Finest (FWAF) was founded in 2008 by Captain Neal Stark, a lifelong offshore and tournament bass fisherman. Recognizing the healing power of time on the water, Neal set out to give back to the veterans who served our country.

What began with Captain Neal taking veterans out on his personal bass boat has grown into a program serving veterans of all eras and abilities. FWAF has facilitated thousands of fishing trips primarily throughout South Florida—from bass fishing in the Everglades to offshore bluewater excursions.

Today, FWAF partners with VA hospitals, veteran centers, universities, and state and federal agencies to provide no-cost fishing experiences that support recovery, connection, and quality of life for the veterans we serve.

Our Program

Fishing With America’s Finest provides a no-cost day of recreational fishing therapy for veterans and their families. Each trip offers veterans the opportunity to get back on the water in a relaxed, supportive environment focused on connection, calm, and enjoyment.

FWAF provides everything needed for the experience, including professional bass boats, pontoon boats, kayaks, or guided shore fishing, along with rods, reels, tackle, and lunch. Trips take place throughout the Florida Everglades, local parks, and stocked facilities, and all fishing is catch-and-release.

Many veterans who participate in our piscatorial therapy program live with physical or emotional wounds related to their military service. Some become withdrawn, experience chronic stress, difficulty sleeping, or social isolation. Time on the water offers a rare opportunity to step away from those pressures and reconnect—with nature, with others, and with themselves.

Research shows that time outdoors can reduce cortisol levels, lower stress and anxiety, improve mood and focus, and support overall mental well-being. In The Journal of Family Practice, Dr. Scott E. Moser describes fishing as “a tremendous anxiolytic,” combining low-impact physical activity with mental relaxation and social connection.

Fishing is simple, unpredictable, and grounding. Whether catching a small fish or a personal best, the experience encourages presence and patience.

At FWAF, we focus on creating a stress-free day where veterans can relax, share time with others who understand their experiences, and rediscover the quiet benefits of being on the water.

In Neal's words

I was born in South Florida. I’ve spent over 50 years fishing in Saltwater & freshwater as an experienced captain. I loved exploring the oceans, backwaters, bays, and freshwater swamps of the Florida Everglades, Flamingo, 10,000 Islands, and the surrounding areas.

No matter what was going on in my life, fishing and exploring would put me totally at ease.

In 2008, I read that America was losing 22 veterans a day to PTSD and reentry issues. I found this to be unacceptable!!!

My idea was to share it with America’s Finest to help them break down some of those mental walls and barriers while bass fishing. I use the capabilities and skills I've acquired along the way to teach U.S. Veterans and local youth the art of bass fishing.

We call it Fishing 101. I’ve used my success on and off the water to promote and give back to our community. Especially the veteran community. I want to help develop their skills and capabilities so they can be successful while fishing and aid in their recovery.

I want to influence others in the community to focus on positive activities. I want to show that there are positive options available other than drugs and alcohol.

It has been an honor to stand and fish alongside all of you. Thank you for the opportunity to be able to give back to you, America’s Finest. May God bless you all!
